Notes from the Past

I'm not a fan of the word "retro," but vintage fashions do have a secure place in my heart. Though I don't own many older pieces, I recognize that there are certain styles that NEVER go out of style and, really, I'd be smart to invest in some more of them.

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark gets it so right.

There are some fashions that are definitely dated - certain cuts of skirts and pants, etc. - and going overboard with too many vintage items does create a costumey look, but incorporating a few classic items can really pull a look together and quickly. Here are a few of my favorites...

Short Leather Gloves

Short leather gloves say to everyone, "I'm a lady of luxery," even if you bought them at TJ Maxx. Classic black will go with everyone, but bright colors can also add needed punch to an otherwise simple dress and heels. I like these mustard yellow and aqua gloves for that purpose.

Not for warmth, short gloves are a very ladylike addition to outfits in fall, winter, spring, even summer. I'm not too thrilled about fingerless gloves, but embellishments like bows, pearls and crystals do attract me a bit more.

Short leather gloves are the perfect combination of dainty femininity and edginess. How many clothing items can you say this about, that you could see Marilyn OR Jackie wearing them?

Wide Leg Trousers

They made their first appearance (popularly) in the late sixties, in "career suits" for ladies venturing into the workplace. By the 70s the trend was - pardon the pun - in full swing. And why? Because they look good on virtually everyone:

* On the short side? Wear heels or platforms and elongate your stature.

* Pregnant? Get 'em with a belly band, or let them sit low underneath your belly. They can replace the elusive "flattering maternity jean" (does that exist??), look great dressed up or down, and conceal the post- (or during-) baby weight. Hooray!

* "Plus size" (I hate that term!)? They are so comfortable, and can be paired with all your awesome embellished shirts and scarves.

* Like menswear? You will love them as a new staple, replacing men's cut pants that tend to not accomodate hips.

Any neutral color will do - gray, black, blue, white or brown. Take your time to find the best fit for you and invest a little more money into them. Guaranteed - they will last a lifetime!

A Fantastic Hat

For me, this is a cloche. It's so perfect - petite, non-assuming, feminine and a throwback to days when women covered their heads in public out of modesty... and not because, in a fit about their hair not looking right, or not having time to do it, they threw on a baseball cap! That's ok for college girls but ladies, really, I think we're better than that!

The cloche makes an appearance in any season that might require or would be suited to a hat: in spring and summer, straw styles keep the sun off the very sensitive skin of one's face, while in the winter a traditional felt or wool cloche hides ones smoky eyes and protects the hair from the effects of falling snow.

Pull your hair into a sidesweep or low bun/ponytail, put on a cloche hat and you will feel so glamorous, peering out from underneath the narrow brim.

T-Strap Pumps

I'm going to be pretty specific here! The perfect t-strap pump is not found with: a stacked platform base, an overly thick heel, or patent leather! And, I'm strictly endorsing pumps, not wedges or stilettos (although if you like those they are good with a) street styles and b) the corporate workplace).

Barring my restrictions, there are SO many lovely styles of this shoe to be found. I love them in virtually all materials, prints, colors and with embellishments. Thick heel, thin heels, wide or narrow straps - doesn't matter to me! Here are some of my favorites:

Shower Attire

Not that kind of shower. Baby shower.

I'm getting used to this whole big belly thing (I actually kind of like it) and it's be nice to show it off, especially when I'm almost to the end.

By today's date I've gained about 20 pounds, but unfortunately the baby is only 2.2 lbs of that! Hmm.. that means I have some extra me that is simply begging to be draped in jewel-toned fabric. Right?!

Wouldn't it be nice to find juuust enough saved to splurge on a (not hand-me-down; but thank you, sisters, for the hand-me-downs!) drapy dress for said baby shower?

Ahh... we shall see..

Isn't this burnt orange color HOT??

What do you think - are bright colors good for a big ol' pregnant girl, or should I stick to black?

Just When You Thought...

... your wardrobe was finally starting to reflect your age...

... your clothes were finally starting to fit right...

... you could find clothes in your styles readily available...

You find out you're having a baby, and it's back to the drawing board!

Ah, well. I like a challenge; isn't that why I started this little fashion blog? All right then! Prepare yourself for the new incarnation of this blog (for the next few months at least, since I'm due in October).. words that are hardly ever uttered without a snicker from those mothers gone before us...

MATERNITY FASHION!!

Seriously, stop laughing. It's possible, isn't it??!! Darn it, I'm going to try! Maybe I even look better pregnant than I do normally, huh? Huh?

You just wait and see!

Stay tuned...

Oh, until then, here's something I spotted - and only two days after I complimented the forever 21 checkout girl for their having many styles that work for maternity clothes but don't look "maternity" and are tres inexpensive -

I know, right? Forever 21 is great for basics - camis, t-shirts and sweaters - as well as having tons of accessories and fun items on the cheap. The downside? Made in China (boo!). But if you need some maternity basics and are on a major budget, they will help a lot!

And look how stylish this chick is! Who says you shouldn't wear stripes when you're pregnant; everyone knows you have a belly - they can see it - so why not wear what you like?

Those shoes though? Not so much. If you've got edema, you ain't wearin' those without a lot of discomfort. Then again, you could just wear them out and then put your feet up on something! See, totally workable!

WIBN Wednesday - Summer Casual

A plain white t-shirt with a deep crew neck, flowy skirt or linen pants and a trendy (is it still trendy? did I miss the trend?) bib necklace... wouldn't it be nice to find yourself looking so elegant in a hurry?

Blues N Neutrals

Blue is an easy color to associate with.

Though like many, I went through a teenage black phase (which continued through college, actually), I eventually ventured into bright colors and blue became my favorite. I've since loved and worn this color in its many shades.

I love blue in its own palette from navy to teal to cerulean to peacock to baby blue. I love it in stripes, on shoes, as lapis lazuli in dangly earrings. It seems to pop up in all kinds of household items of mine, too: my water bottle, bed sheets, favorite wall print, kitchen spatulas. Even my cat's eyes are a sky blue! Maybe that's why I like him so much.

Pousse-Pousse, greatest cat ever.

From tranquil seas to cloudless skies, the memories of sweet summer days in my youth come floating back to me in a fog of blue. My favorite clothing items over the years mostly incorporate this hue. But the second most common color in my wardrobe? A creamy cocoa brown.

Beige and cream, brown and blue together... what could be prettier? Here are some of my picks in this palette:

WIBN Wednesday - June 23

Wouldn't it be nice to party at the pool in a flirty floral or chic colorblock dress?

Keep it easy and breezy (no covergirl endorsement here) in summer dresses for under $30. Pair with sunglasses, sandals and a smile. Oh, and of course the stunningly simple beach hair; spray with saltwater, scrunch and let air dry.

Get your funnoodles out because they are the only accessory you're going to need! =)

WIBN Wednesday with... Lindsay Lohan!

Wouldn't it be nice... if Lindsay Lohan had a job that required her to wear... pants?!

Correction: wouldn't it be nice if she had a job at all?

hee hee...
